It is the story of a man’s own integrity winning through against the odds. The modern classic about a dedicated teacher in a tough London school who slowly and painfully breaks down the barriers of racial prejudice. A man’s own integrity – his concern and love for others – had won through. A dedicated teacher had turned hate into love, teenage rebelliousness into self-respect, contempt into into consideration for others. But instead of a catastrophe, a miracle happened. When he took all forty six to museums and to the opera, riots we predicted.

He taught them to wash their faces and to read Shakespeare. Then he taught defiant, hard-bitten delinquents to call him “Sir,” and to address the girls who had grown up beside them in the gutter as “Miss”. Braithwaite, the new teacher, had first to fight the class bully. The all-time Classic schoolroom drama – as relevant as today’s headlines … He shamed them, wrestled with them, enlightened them, and – ultimately – learned to live them. Lulu is singing on behalf of all the students who “grew up” under the teacher’s supervision, but could not express it any other way.

So the song also deals with the idea that the student could only “give” herself to him in a platonic sense. One of the sub-plots in the movie, To Sir With Love, is the “sexual tension” that exists between the teacher and one of his students. Listen to the song and watch the flick…both are great. It was a reversal in the social chain where these kids were ghetto and he was educated. Lulu is singing about their teacher, a black man, who “took them from crayons to perfume”, taught them right from wrong, and how do they repay him for all he has done for them. Or just listen to the song! She is singing about her respect for a black teacher who taught her and her classmates the real meaning of love.
